The large boulders below the RAC crag provide one of the most well-used bouldering venues in the area. The ongoing popularity of this fine circuit is ensured by a number of appealing factors; not only is the climbing superb, but the boulders are blessed with a gloriously sunny aspect and friendly landings, and all this within a short stroll from the roadside.
Close by are a few other excellent bouldering venues; be sure to check out the Plas y Brenin boulder (which can be found in the woodland on the opposite side of the river to the outdoor activity centre) and the Bingo Wings and Rhythm and Stealth blocks on the Creigiau’r Garth hillside (on the opposite side of the valley to the RAC Boulders).
Bouldering is possible year round, even in the depths of winter the front sides of the boulders soak up an attractive quota of sunshine. The ground beneath the roadside face of the block right of the track can be damp after rain but the rock, save for one or two drainage streaks, is very quick drying, especially on the sunny south and west facets.
The boulders are clearly visible from the road about 2 kms west of Plas y Brenin. Park in the layby, but do not block the gate for the track that leads up and right through the middle of the main blocks.
