The Gwydyr Forest sits just above Betws y Coed and Llanrwst on the eastern side of the Carneddau mountain range. It is a delightful spot with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Within this sprawling woodland is the famous Marin Trail. This much-celebrated 25km trail has a perfect combination of forest road ascents and brilliant single-track descents. The single-track varies from technical and rocky to some sweeping and graceful sections. The trail draws you deep into the heart of the forest but then pops you right out in the open just when you least expect it, There is certainly a delicious contrast between the dark, atmospheric forest areas and the more open scenic ridgelines.
It is important to come well prepared, as there are no trailhead facilities. The trail is quite remote so make sure you have plenty of food and water, plus adequate clothing and bike spares. You should also tell someone of your intentions and estimated return time, just to be sure. The total ascent for the trail is 450m, and it is normally completed in 2 – 4 hours. The trails are used by other people too, so please be respectful of this and slow down for walkers and horses.
The trail starts from the Gwydyr Forest Centre, which has a car park.
