A lovely part of North Wales with rounded heathery hills, bubbling brooks and grassy trails. A delightful green lane exploration of pastures new awaits you. This route certainly gives some excellent riding high on the shoulders of mountains. The route can also be extended and arguably improved by connecting with the Clwydian North ride; this increases the physical challenge of the route but does remove some of the road sections.
The north route gives an enjoyable ride in itself, staying high on the mountain for most of the journey. Once again there is a fair bit of road riding to be done but this can be got out of the way at the start of the ride (or done at the end if you prefer). Most of the riding is straightforward but the byway descent at the end of the route gives a little more technical riding. The climb out of Afon Wen is a bit of a trial by fire but after that life is good.
The route/s will be possible in all but the very worst winter conditions when drifting snow may cause problems.
Start from the Moel Famau car park for the Clwydian South route and from Nannerch for the Clwydian North route.
