A very enjoyable ‘double top’ route with outstanding views, excellent riding and some tricky challenges; beware of walkers.
Starting from Rhyd Ddu this varied route takes in a broad sweep of the valley and some leg pumping ascent. An initial section takes you up an increasingly entertaining mountain path (which is rideable, bar a 20m section) to Bwlch Cwm Llan on the southern side of the Snowdon Massif. You then head back down, retracing the same line at first before kicking off left to reach the main road and enter the vast Beddgelert forest. Forest trails lead up to a contour line round the top of edge and a tricky traverse of open hill side above Llyn y Gader and running back to Rhyd Ddu where the temptation to stop off for a well-deserved pint may be too hard to resist.
The route should be possible in all but the very worst winter conditions when drifting snow may cause problems on some of the higher sections.
Start from the Rhyd Ddu car park. The Welsh Highland Railway also has a station here and there are toilet facilities.
